Codex Cloud can continue a coding task while a developer's computer is off. It still needs a prepared environment with the right source code, dependencies and service access. Otherwise, much of the task may be spent fixing installation problems or producing a change the team cannot reproduce.

The new environment experience was announced on 29 September 2026. This guide uses documentation checked on 1 October 2026. Rollout, plan eligibility and administrator settings affect availability. Using Codex Cloud.

Treat the environment as a task's starting point

A published environment contains prepared repositories, tools, dependencies and access settings. Each new task gets its own workspace. Republishing the setup affects new tasks; existing tasks keep their state.

After changing the configuration, start a fresh trial. Returning to an older task can leave you looking at its previous dependencies. Commit important work to source control. A new task does not automatically recover another task's uncommitted files.

Prepare one repository

Start with a bounded change, such as a validation bug with a clear reproduction. Create the environment on desktop or web, connect the appropriate GitHub account and select the repository. Review the setup report, missing tools and command results before publishing. Environment configuration.

Record installation, startup and relevant test commands. If a test already fails on the starting code, document that fact. The agent needs to distinguish an existing failure from a regression.

Separate network access from authentication

A private package registry requires both an allowed destination and valid credentials. The documented network controls include selected-domain access. Test a required service and a destination outside the permitted scope.

Keep secrets out of the repository and task instructions. Review the environment-variable, network-secret and personal-vault mechanisms available to the account. Before sharing an Enterprise environment, inspect prepared files and environment-owned credentials: they can expose shared resources.

Each person uses their own GitHub connection. Access to an environment does not replace repository permissions or give access to someone else's tasks.

Check the new experience's limitations

The current environment guide lists computer/browser use, GitLab and self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server as unsupported in the new cloud experience. Repository skills are available, but personal skills from a local computer do not sync automatically.

Code Review, Security Review and some existing integrations continue to use Codex Cloud Legacy during the transition. Confirm which experience a setup instruction covers before applying it.

Accept the first task

Provide a reproduction, expected behaviour and change boundaries. Ask for changed files, executed commands and anything the agent could not verify. Inspect the actual code and test results.

Measure preparation, agent execution and human review time. With the next task, check whether the reusable environment reduces setup work. Generated line count is not a useful savings measure.

For example, five tasks needing 30 minutes of review each still require 2.5 staff-hours, even if the agent ran them in parallel. Replace this planning assumption with a measurement during the trial.

Budget for the rollout

Include the Codex plan and usage limits, repository preparation, test services and review time. Syntalith's AI-Native course is quoted individually from the repository, programme and participants. A broader process audit starts at €600 excluding VAT, with its own deliverables.

Discuss the codebase and first assignment. The team rollout guide covers adoption, while Codex Code Review covers evaluating proposed changes.

Free process scan

Start with a free process scan.

  • A 30-minute call with the engineer who would lead the work.
  • A review of the processes that cost you the most time and money.
  • A written summary: a possible direction, missing information and the next step.

The scan chooses one process to assess, and within 2 business days you receive a recommendation, including when a simpler route is the better fit.
