DeepSeek Harness is an environment for an agent to work through tasks using documents, code, files and tools. It is distinct from the language model. The model proposes steps; the surrounding software provides tools, working files and execution state.

Checked on 1 October 2026: the official site describes an open-source project in worldwide public preview, with a desktop app and a web interface launched from code. DeepSeek Harness. Preview availability allows evaluation but does not establish production readiness for every plugin.

Choose a useful first assignment

The project demonstrates documents, spreadsheets, coding, research and background scripts. Plugins extend tools and the interface, including an example of creating a plugin through conversation.

A company could start by comparing two specification versions. Give the agent copies, ask for changes with references and have a knowledgeable person review the result. This is a proposed Harness trial.

The output should also identify unreadable sections and missing attachments. A confident explanation cannot substitute for an accurate comparison.

Trace where data goes

A desktop interface does not determine where inference happens. Document extracts may be sent to an external model API. Search, browser tools, plugins and backups can introduce further processing locations.

ComponentQuestion to resolve
ModelWhich provider and processing terms apply?
FilesWhich folder is readable and where are outputs written?
PluginsWhich tools and external services do they use?
HistoryWhere are inputs, results and logs retained?
Background workWhat continues after the interface closes?

Open source provides visibility into the published code. It is not an automatic guarantee of local processing, absence of telemetry or a secure configuration.

Treat a plugin as executable software

An extension may add filesystem, terminal or service access. Check its source, version and permissions. A model-generated plugin still needs review; generating it in a conversation does not establish trust.

The Harness site labels features including agent teams, auto approval review and scheduled tasks as experimental. Check the status in the version used. Start with a task that does not require independent sending or production-system writes.

Evaluate the trial

Prepare the expected differences between documents, including a subtle change. Run the task on copies. Check references, output accuracy and preservation of the inputs.

Then try a missing file, tool failure and interrupted execution. Record model spend and review time. If work stops, you should be able to determine what happened and where it can continue. Those observations support a decision about the next trial.

Budget and implementation support

Include setup, models, tools, hosting and maintenance. The product page alone cannot establish the cost of a particular workflow. Check the licence for the chosen version and the services it actually uses.

Syntalith can help evaluate the environment and scope a pilot. Our personal operator offering using Hermes or OpenClaw starts at €600 excluding VAT. That starting price applies to those solutions; a Harness trial needs its own quote. Running costs are additional.

Describe the task and data requirements. We can select an approach and agree how it will be evaluated. The Harness, Hermes and OpenClaw comparison covers the choices.

Free process scan

Start with a free process scan.

  • A 30-minute call with the engineer who would lead the work.
  • A review of the processes that cost you the most time and money.
  • A written summary: a possible direction, missing information and the next step.

The scan chooses one process to assess, and within 2 business days you receive a recommendation, including when a simpler route is the better fit.
