A shopping agent can read a cart, update supported details and prepare an order for confirmation. Shopify added checkout WebMCP tools on 28 September 2026. They operate in the buyer's browser session and use the checkout state the buyer sees. Shopify announcement.

Checked on 1 October 2026: the feature does not require merchant configuration. Using it still requires a compatible agent implementation. It does not turn every chatbot or ordinary browser into a shopping assistant.

Browser tools and server integration

WebMCP exposes tools from the browser page. Shopify distinguishes this from Checkout MCP for server-side agents. They use related checkout objects and states through different execution mechanisms.

Agent developers need to handle tool identity, page navigation and current state. Shopify also documents Web Bot Auth signing and registered keys so it can identify the agent. This is an agent-operator responsibility, separate from operating a shop. Checkout WebMCP documentation.

Follow the checkout state

ToolPurpose
get_checkoutRead current state, messages and completion details
update_checkoutUpdate supported checkout information
complete_checkoutSubmit after the buyer confirms
navigate_to_storefrontReturn to an available storefront

The ready_for_complete state indicates technical readiness. The agent must show the current order and total and obtain permission to place it. A changed total needs renewed confirmation. Only completed confirms the order.

Hand control back when required

Login, an additional order-review step or a payment challenge can require the buyer. With 3D Secure, the person completes the interaction. An agent should not attempt to work around the handoff using other page controls.

A missing tool response does not necessarily mean the purchase failed. Navigation can happen before the result arrives. Inspect the current state instead of blindly resubmitting. The documented handling differs for an extra review step and a payment challenge.

Updates need care too. update_checkout has replacement semantics, so construct its request from a fresh read and preserve required values. A short single-field example may not be a complete update.

What merchants can improve

An agent still needs accurate product information: variant, units, availability, delivery and price. Similar colour names or an unclear pack quantity can cause the wrong selection before checkout.

A merchant can test those cases and remove ambiguity. Tool support does not guarantee search visibility or sales growth. Measure whether the agreed purchase scenario can be completed and where assistance is required.

What paid work would cover

Shopify does not require a paid “WebMCP activation” service. Useful work might involve a catalogue review, a controlled shopping trial, integration repairs or a custom agent. Scope determines the price.

Syntalith's process audit starts at €600 excluding VAT. Apps and agents start at €3,000 excluding VAT, with agreed implementation scope and separate running costs. The final quote depends on the work required for the particular store.

Free process scan

Start with a free process scan.

  • A 30-minute call with the engineer who would lead the work.
  • A review of the processes that cost you the most time and money.
  • A written summary: a possible direction, missing information and the next step.

The scan chooses one process to assess, and within 2 business days you receive a recommendation, including when a simpler route is the better fit.
