What is OpenClaw and when it makes sense in a company
Short answer
OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant under the MIT licence. It runs on the user's device or server and links models, tools and messengers through one gateway. The code is free, and you pay for the model, the server and maintenance, about €332 a month in our scenario. In a company it makes sense when a task needs several sources checked and the next step chosen, with controlled effects.

Open-source AI agents: statistics 2026
392,716
GitHub stars for the OpenClaw repository, MIT licence, project started on 24 November 2025. The code is free, and running it costs the model, the server and maintenance.
256,096
According to GitHub (2026), the Hermes Agent repository has 256,096 stars, 55,890 forks and an MIT licence, and the project started on 22 July 2025.

40%
According to Gartner (2025), over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 because of costs, unclear value or weak risk controls.
130
According to Gartner (2025), of the thousands of agentic AI vendors only about 130 offer real agentic solutions.

When OpenClaw makes sense
The starting point for checking features, installation and requirements is the official OpenClaw documentation. The OpenClaw Foundation runs the project under the MIT licence, with no paid plan and no hosted service. At Syntalith we use it when the assistant has to choose the next action and the environment can be isolated: we limit files and credentials, record operations and send production effects for approval.
A good candidate
several sources, a varying path
Analysing many documents, a dossier, work on a repository, checking sources.
A weak candidate
fixed steps
A simple form, an FAQ, lead qualification, an automation with a few states.
A person at the end
material for a decision
A proposal or a set of sources for a person to decide on.
OpenClaw, an automation or a copilot
| Criterion | OpenClaw | Automation | Copilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Path of work | Varies, the agent chooses the action | Defined in advance | A person chooses the step |
| Tools | Files, a terminal, integrations in isolation | Actions tied to stages | Features of the app |
| Production effect | Permissions, history, often a person's approval | Explicit flow rules | The user approves |
If the process is predictable and every state should be described explicitly, we more often choose an ordinary automation. OpenClaw is not automatically better than a simpler solution. It makes sense when a varying path justifies the cost of isolation and supervision. According to Gartner (2025), of the thousands of agent vendors only about 130 offer real agentic solutions, so the word „agent” proves nothing on its own.
Installation is the smallest part
Check the installation requirements in the current documentation, because Node.js versions and dependencies change quickly.
- Which environment it runs in and which folders, systems and secrets it can see
- Whether it may perform a production action or only prepare it for approval
- Where it writes its log and who reviews the exceptions
- How you update OpenClaw without losing control
- Where the data goes: the model, APIs, logs, backups and telemetry
The security documentation describes one trust boundary per gateway, which does not separate mutually hostile users, and the command openclaw security audit.
What a working OpenClaw setup costs
- Licence
- €0 (MIT)
- Hetzner CX23 server
- €5.49
- Model, 300 tasks × 10 calls, Claude Sonnet 5.5
- €24.10
- Maintenance 2 h a week × 4.33
- 8.66 h = €302
- Total
- €332 a month
- Time recovered, 300 tasks × 5 min
- 25 h = €873
€541 left a month
The number of tasks, the calls (2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens each), the minutes saved per task and the maintenance time are the scenario's assumptions. €34.90 an hour is the EU average hourly labour cost for 2025 according to Eurostat. Server at Hetzner's price list from 15 June 2026. Model at Anthropic's rates, converted at the ECB rate of 1.1205 USD per euro on 22 October 2026.
You set up the agent yourself
€0 licence
You configure it, update it and respond to failures. For a technical person with time.
An agent for the team
from €3,000 net
Agreed tools, permissions, a history of actions, acceptance and maintenance after the start.
Your team can practise agent work on its own repository in the AI-Native course. The differences from Hermes are in the comparison of Hermes and OpenClaw, and installing it on your own server is covered in how to install OpenClaw and your own AI agent on a VPS.
