Agentic commerce: how to prepare your store for shopping through AI agents
Short answer
You prepare a store for AI agents when an agent finds in your data everything it needs to compare: the variant, the price with delivery, availability and returns. Add access for ChatGPT's bots to the site and measurement of traffic from chats. The automation costs from €3,000 net at Syntalith and, with 400 product cards a month at 6 minutes each, pays back in 3.1 months.

What works today, and what is only emerging
On 24 March 2026 OpenAI announced an expansion of product discovery in ChatGPT through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, with offers compared side by side. Forrester described this period as the agentic commerce leader pulling back from buying in the chat towards product discovery. Google is developing the Universal Commerce Protocol, and buying in AI Mode requires a Merchant Center account. The Polish marketplace Allegro launched an app in ChatGPT on 12 May 2026: the customer sees offer cards with the price and rating, and the „Buy on Allegro” button leads to payment. According to Eurostat (2025), 78% of EU internet users bought or ordered goods or services online in the previous 12 months.
For a store, the conclusion is practical: an agent compares offers on the basis of data. If the feed lacks a variant, the delivery cost or availability, the agent will choose the store that provided them.
| Layer | What to check | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Product data | variants, price with delivery, availability, returns in the feed | Merchant Center |
| Bot access | OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are not blocked in robots.txt | OpenAI, bots |
| Measurement | traffic with the parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in analytics | OpenAI Help |
| Checkout | the store's own checkout, payment unchanged | the store's decision |

Payback of €3,000

The volume, the time and the checking share are the scenario's assumptions. €34.90 an hour is the EU average hourly labour cost for 2025 according to Eurostat. Model: 3,000 input and 800 output tokens per call at Anthropic's rates, converted at the ECB rate of 1.1205 USD per euro on 22 October 2026. The scenario covers completing attributes in new and changed product cards.
The count covers the work around a case: searching, reading, writing and passing things on. What remains is the time to check the output, 30% of today's work in the scenario. Before the quote we measure both times on 20 to 100 cases the team has already handled, in a €0 test that takes 5 working days.
What not to do at this stage
Building your own sales agent with the A2A protocol, with no agent on the other side, rarely pays back, as the article on A2A describes. Handing the whole checkout to an outside channel is also premature while the market leaders are themselves changing the model of buying in the chat. Data comes first: a completed feed also helps in ordinary search and price comparison sites, so this work is not wasted even if shopping through agents develops more slowly.

Where to start
Start with the 100 products that bring the most sales, and check whether an agent would find the variant, the price with delivery and availability in their data. We build this as part of AI automations. For the free process review, a description of one case from recent weeks and the tools it ran through is enough. You do not need to send confidential documents, and you get a written plan within 2 working days.

How we count the payback: AI in e-commerce
We run the same count for your store in the free process review.
€2,792
a month for handling 800 orders that bypass the checkout
Payback: 1.3 mo.
6 minutes to retype an order or answer a question and checking in 15% of the old time are our assumptions. €34.90 an hour is the EU average hourly labour cost for 2025 according to Eurostat, for companies with 10 or more employees. Model cost: reading the order in our system (about €0.0006) plus matching the lines (Claude Sonnet 5.5, about 3,000 + 500 tokens), at the ECB rate of 1.1205 USD per euro on 22 October 2026.
