AI for lawyers: the cost of the first scope
Short answer
What AI costs a law firm depends on whether the team needs to work with text in an approved tool, training, or an app that works on case files. At Syntalith, training costs from €1,150 net a day, and an automation, app or agent from €3,000 net. When 6 lawyers save 2 hours a week, the training pays back in 0.7 months.

Compare the cost of the same task
A lawyer wants a list of the differences between two versions of a contract. One proposal covers learning to work in an approved tool. The other takes files from the firm's repository, recognises the versions and shows the changes in a panel. Both are about comparing text, but the second also covers the flow of documents. Before you talk to a supplier, settle where the versions sit today, who picks them and who judges the result.

The hours saved are the scenario's assumption, which we check by timing the tasks before the training and after 30 days. €34.90 an hour is the EU average hourly labour cost for 2025 according to Eurostat. Hourly rates in law firms are usually higher, so this is a careful count. ChatGPT Business or Claude Team Standard at $25 a seat with monthly billing, at the ECB rate of 1.1205 USD per euro on 22 October 2026.
According to a Harvard Business School study (2023) of 758 consultants, tasks within the model's capabilities went 25.1% faster with AI. Outside that range the results got worse, so the training teaches people to recognise the boundary.
A licence is not the budget of the whole firm
| Item | What to settle |
|---|---|
| Licences | The exact plan, the period and the number of users |
| Administration | The administrator's time, roles and removing access |
| Rules | Which material may be used and who approves the text |
| Access across teams | Who sees which matters |
| Archive | Putting it in order and copies, as a separate item |
Do not carry the price of a consumer account over to a company purchase without checking the product and the contract. This guide does not contain prices of specialist legal databases.
With case documents, the end of an employee's contract and the copies also count. The firm must be able to remove access on the same day and know where the files remained. According to Eurostat (2025), 52.5% of EU enterprises that considered AI and did not use it named a lack of clarity about the legal consequences. That is why the working rules are usually the first document we prepare together with the training.

- 03CheckA lawyer compares them with the source text.
- 04RecordWhat was missed and how long the check took.

The GDPR and DPA guide helps you describe the data flow for assessment. If the problem is working with the output, start with team AI training. If employees cannot find the right material, discuss the limits of access to case files. For the first meeting, a description of the task and the number of lawyers are enough, with no content of client matters. You get the plan in writing within 2 working days.
„I already use AI.”
Your people too. Just no rules.
From our conversations with companies
5 na 10 employees paste sensitive data into private AI accounts: contracts, invoices, customer data.
In ESET survey (2026)
1 na 10 admits this in the survey.
Customer data pasted into a private AI account without an data processing agreement is a violation of the GDPR.
Don't worry, we won't tell anyone :)
What do we see in companies that "already use"
- Only ChatGPT or Claude accounts, without plugins, skills, integrations and MCP servers with company tools.
- Company programs are not connected to AI. People still click through systems and Excel, and enter chat data manually.
- Lack of company standards: everyone writes instructions in their own way, no one shares what works.
- No rules for personal data, GDPR and company secrets.
- No limits and no visibility: no one knows who uses AI, how much and for what.

„Is my data safe?”
Yes. You choose where they go: from your company account to the model on your server.
00Employee's private account
Customer and company data ends up in an account that the company cannot see or control. There is no data processing agreement, so it is a violation of the GDPR. When an employee leaves, the chat history goes with them.
01ChatGPT or Claude corporate account
The provider does not use your data to train models. A copy of the queries remains in his logs for up to 30 days.
02API with zero retention (ZDR)
The provider processes the request and does not save anything. It requires his consent, we prepare the application together.
03Processing in the EU
Queries are counted and stored in Europe: OpenAI in the EU region, Claude via clouds with the EU region.
04Model at your place
The open model runs on your server or in your cloud in the EU. The data does not go outside the company.
What we do with every implementation
- Confidentiality agreement and data processing agreement before we receive any data.
- You choose the cases for the prototype and we anonymize them upon request.
- The data stays in the EU and we delete it after the test.
- Corporate accounts with an administrator on your side.
When data cannot leave the company
The open model runs on your server or in your cloud in the EU. To choose from:

When you have thousands of similar emails, documents or reports, we teach a small open model based on your examples. It works for you, responds quickly and costs less to maintain than a large model. We measure quality on issues that the model has not seen while learning.

Questions
How much does AI for a law firm cost?
Team training from €1,150 net a day, and document automation, an app on case files or an agent from €3,000 net. Licences, setting up the environment and putting the archive in order are agreed separately.
Where should a law firm start?
With one task, for example a list of the changes between two versions of a contract. Check the comparison features of your current editor. If they are enough, a model helps only to explain the changes, and the team needs training.
Does buying an AI plan let us work on case files?
Not on its own. The firm decides which material may be used, who has access across teams and what happens to copies. You describe the data flow for assessment before case files are used.
How do we test the tool before expanding it?
On made-up versions of a contract with one changed amount and one deleted clause. A lawyer compares the differences found with the source text and records what was missed and how long the check took.
