A downloadable model: what to review before deployment

From internal tool to customer service

Suppose a company tested a local model as an employee assistant. It now wants to offer the function to customers through a portal. That changes the use: there are different users and a different product. The team should describe the change to whoever reviews the terms, even if the same model file is involved.

A useful description explains who uses the application, where the model runs and what customers receive. A complete specification is not necessary at this point. However, an application using a model and redistribution of the model files are distinct arrangements. The appropriate reviewer assesses their legal implications; a model conversation does not settle them.

Model cards help locate the evidence

Hugging Face describes model cards as a place for intended uses, limitations and metadata, including license information. The card helps assemble documentation for a selected variant. The reviewer also needs the full terms linked from it.

Record which model and release the provider proposes. Similar family names do not establish identical terms for every variant. A modified version needs material explaining its origin. The list should match what will be deployed, rather than only the name used in a sales presentation.

Other components may handle document reading, retrieval or speech recognition. Include those actually used in the application. Selecting the language model does not finish the discussion of the whole solution's terms.

Compare alternatives before ordering

If the company cannot accept the selected model's terms, compare another option on the same task. A change need not mean abandoning the application, but quality and environment needs must be reassessed. An approved external service may also be an alternative where data requirements allow it.

For a simple task, search or rules may perform part of the work without generating text. Consider that where the model was only meant to transfer known fields or find a document by number. Technical scope should follow the user's need, without attachment to the model used in the first trial.

What to agree with the provider

Also agree on what happens when a component changes later. The application maintainer needs to know when another terms review is required. The agreed inventory gives the buyer a reference for acceptance and future changes, without promising automatic legal compliance.
