Local AI for branches with unreliable internet

The branch loses internet access, but a customer speaking another language is still waiting at the service desk. A local AI assistant could help an employee understand the question and write a short explanation. Before buying, establish whether that is the help the branch needs most or whether restoring access to company systems should come first.

Translating the question does not reveal the order status

Suppose the branch's internal network and a previously prepared computer running a model are working, but the internet connection has failed. A customer shows the employee a question in Polish: “Czy moje zamówienie jest gotowe do odbioru?”. The employee enters it in the local application and receives: “Is my order ready for pickup?”. They now understand the purpose of the visit.

The cloud-based order system remains unavailable. The employee writes: “I can't access the order system right now, so I can't confirm whether your order is ready.” The assistant could suggest the Polish wording: “Nie mam teraz dostępu do systemu zamówień, więc nie mogę potwierdzić, czy zamówienie jest gotowe”. The employee reviews the text before showing it to the customer.

When backup internet should come first

If most service-desk work needs current data from head office, a local assistant addresses only a small part of the problem. Compare it first with an additional connection that could restore access to the applications employees use.

Meraki documents failover to a backup uplink. Behavior varies with operating mode and version, and interruptions can occur during the switch.

The branch manager can explain what staff do during an outage: are they mainly waiting for data, or are they still holding conversations that need language assistance? IT can then compare two different purchases. Backup connectivity aims to restore online services, while a local application keeps selected language tasks available at the branch. Some branches may have a reason to use both.

A phrase sheet may be enough

If conversations during outages rely on a few standard messages, approved translations stored at the desk are a simple starting point. Check the existing offline translator or current application's features too. Employees may just need quick access to a familiar sentence rather than a newly written version each time.

A local model is worth assessing when customers' questions vary and employees need to phrase short clarifications in their own words. Someone who knows both languages should assess whether suggestions preserve meaning in conversations typical of the branch. Employees also need an agreed way to get help when they cannot judge the proposed text.

What needs to remain available at the branch

In this example, the internal network still works, so service desks can reach a shared computer at the branch. Access to the model also depends on that connection.

Ollama documents a local-only mode without cloud models or web search, and the ability to serve a model over a local network. Concurrent processing depends on available memory and involves request queues.

A trial should include several desks using the assistant at the same time. An employee waiting with a customer needs a useful suggestion soon enough for the conversation. The application also needs to open at the start of a shift without internet access. Sign-in and stored phrases are part of that task alongside running the model.

The person responsible for supporting the tool needs to know who updates language material and the application across branches, and where employees report problems. If the team is considering a shared computer instead of separate installations at each desk, our workstation versus shared-server comparison covers access for several users and ongoing operation.

Commissioning language assistance for a branch

Syntalith proposes a local AI application for short translations and explanations, fitted to conversations at the service desk. Work can begin with one branch and selected languages, comparing the model with an available translator and stored phrases. The scope includes a view for employees to review text and operation under agreed conditions without internet access.

The branch manager contributes examples of conversations, while a bilingual reviewer assesses the suggestions' meaning. IT identifies the available devices and support arrangements. A joint trial will show whether local assistance merits further development and use at other locations.
